Have you ever started doing something and thought, “This really isn’t for me”?
That’s how I feel about teaching software outside of QuickBooks. Yes, I’ve dabbled in creating videos about Xero and FreshBooks, but I’m more familiar with QuickBooks. It’s where I’ve built my expertise, and where I feel confident that I can help others.
But just because QuickBooks is what I know best doesn’t mean there isn’t value in exploring other tools, or learning from people who specialize in them.
As bookkeepers, one of the best things we can do for ourselves and our clients is to keep learning. And that’s what today’s post is all about: ongoing education in bookkeeping, where to find trustworthy resources, and why it matters more than ever.
The Value of Specialists
One of the things I love about the bookkeeping community is how many smart, generous people are out there sharing their knowledge. Take Kate Johnson, for example. If you have questions about FreshBooks, she’s the person I point you to.
Kate runs Heritage Business Services, where she works with FreshBooks day in and day out. She also writes the Bookkeeping Side Hustle newsletter, a fantastic resource for anyone looking to grow their bookkeeping skills or business.
I had the pleasure of joining Kate on stage at BKX 2022, and I can tell you, she’s the real deal.
She’s not out there selling “get rich quick” crash courses that promise you can earn six figures in a few weeks. Instead, she emphasizes steady learning, building connections, and lifting others up.
That’s the kind of education I believe in.
Why Bookkeepers Should Keep Learning
The world of bookkeeping isn’t static. Software updates roll out constantly, tax rules evolve, and clients’ needs change. If you learned bookkeeping once and stopped there, you’d quickly fall behind.
Here are a few reasons why ongoing education is so important:
Software changes fast. Just look at QuickBooks Online, it seems like there’s always a new feature or a redesign. If you aren’t keeping up, you’ll miss out on efficiencies (or worse, make mistakes).
Clients expect guidance. Business owners often rely on bookkeepers not just to “do the books,” but to provide insights and advice. The more you know, the more valuable you become.
It helps you specialize. Maybe you want to work with e-commerce sellers, creatives, or nonprofits. Each niche comes with unique challenges. Education helps you build expertise in those areas.
It keeps you motivated. Learning new things breaks up the monotony. Instead of doing the same tasks day after day, you get to expand your skill set and feel excited about your work.
Where to Find Reliable Learning Resources
Here’s the tricky part: not all educational resources are created equal. Some are fantastic. Others are… less so. And in a world where anyone can make a YouTube video or launch a course, you have to be picky.
Here are some places I recommend:
1. Newsletters like Bookkeeping Side Hustle
Kate’s Bookkeeping Side Hustle newsletter is one of the best out there. It’s packed with useful insights, links to events, and honest conversations about what it’s really like to build a bookkeeping business.
2. Trusted YouTube Channels
If you need help with FreshBooks, check out Kate’s FreshBooks YouTube channel. If QuickBooks is your focus, my Gentle Frog YouTube channel is full of tutorials, walkthroughs, and explanations that go beyond the basics.
3. Online Learning Resources
I’ve compiled a page of Online Learning Resources for Bookkeepers that includes links to courses I trust, including some I’ve created myself. It’s a great starting point if you’re looking to expand your knowledge.
4. LinkedIn Connections
Don’t overlook LinkedIn. Kate’s profile, for example, is full of tips, conversations, and event announcements. Follow people who are actively contributing to the bookkeeping conversation. You’ll learn a ton just by staying engaged.
Avoiding the “Six-Figure Shortcut” Trap
One of my biggest frustrations with the bookkeeping education space is the flood of ads promising easy success. You’ve probably seen them: “Become a bookkeeper in six weeks and earn six figures working from the beach!”
Let’s be honest, that’s not how this works.
Building a bookkeeping business takes time, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning.
Courses that promise quick riches usually leave people disappointed.
Instead of chasing shortcuts, focus on building a strong foundation.
Learn the fundamentals of accounting. Master the software you want to use. Keep improving little by little. That’s the path to real, sustainable success.
My Own Commitment to Education
I believe in practicing what I preach, which is why I’m always creating new learning materials. I recently updated my QBO GoSkills course because the interface has undergone a complete overhaul in QBO.
My goal is always the same: provide education that’s practical, approachable, and grounded in real-world bookkeeping.
Final Thoughts
Education isn’t just something you check off a list when you start your bookkeeping career. It’s an ongoing process that keeps you sharp, valuable, and connected to the community.
Whether you’re learning from specialists like Kate Johnson, reading newsletters like Bookkeeping Side Hustle, or diving into trusted courses and YouTube tutorials, the key is to keep going. Don’t fall for shortcuts. Focus on building knowledge that lasts.
And if you’re ever looking for trusted resources, you’ll find plenty on the Gentle Frog website and YouTube channel. I love teaching, but more than that, I love helping people feel confident in their bookkeeping.
